Freswick Bay is on the east coast of Caithness, 4 miles south of Duncansby Head. Freswick House was built by William Sinclair in 1760. Near to Freswick House is Lambaborg Castle which was built by the Viking Swein Asleifson in around 1140. The castle is on an outcrop of rock and the only access to it is across a 4ft wide piece of land with a 100ft drop on either side. The Mowat family were granted Lambaborg and the lands of Freswick by Robert the Bruce.
They renamed the castle Buncholie and it remained in their family until 1661 when it began to fall into disrepair.
