Farming

7. A cattle auction

print page

Lord Lovat, a noted cattle breeder, is seen here attending a cattle auction in Inverness. Auction marts play an important role in the buying and selling of livestock and bring buyers from far and wide. Towns such as Dingwall, Inverness and Oban owed much of their growth to the presence of a market. The marts at Inverness have gone, but the Dingwall Mart has relocated to the outskirts of the town and continues to bring farmers together. Lamb sales are still held at Lairg and Rogart and act as social gatherings for the many sheep farmers that live in remote areas of Sutherland.
