Newspaper Indexes

The Am Baile Newspaper Index is a searchable database of stories and articles carried in the newspapers of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. It does not contain the full text of the articles, just an abstract and a reference to which issue of the newspaper the article is contained in. Information on how to view the original articles or request copies is given below.

The newspapers available for searching are as indicated below.

  • The Inverness Journal (1807 - 1849)
  • The Inverness Advertiser (1849 - 1885)
  • Scottish Highlander (1885 - 1898)
  • Inverness Courier (1879, 1898 - 1901, 1920-1939)
  • John O'Groat Journal (1836 - 1887)

Guide to getting started

  • Select one or all of the newspapers you want to search from the drop down menu. This is optional.
  • Select a Primary Subject e.g. Agriculture from the list to limit your searches to a particular area. This is optional.
  • Select a Start Year and End Year to restrict your search to a particular time period. This is optional.
  • Type in a keyword or phrase. By default, the search will also return similar versions of these words, so a search for entertain will also return matches for entertains, entertaining etc. If you require an exact match for a word or phrase then use quotation marks e.g. "entertain".
