The Highland Council is the democratically-elected Local Authority for Badenoch and Strathspey, Caithness, Inverness, Lochaber, Nairn, Ross and Cromarty, Skye and Lochalsh and Sutherland with a population of 208,000 scattered over 10,000 square miles, primarily in small, rural communities.
The Council is committed to achieving equality in access to services for its residents, and to promoting the indigenous heritage and cultures of the Highlands. Archival materials and museums collections, represent a key element of the area's heritage but are, at present, often difficult to access.
The Am Baile project will provide tremendous opportunities to make these materials available to users both throughout the Highlands and, worldwide. By placing Gaelic at the heart of the project, 'Am Baile' will be a major new resource for Gaelic speakers and learners.
