Welcome to the Highland Sites and Monuments Record (SMR). The online version of the SMR is available here. It can be searched using the simple or advanced search facility at the top left of the page. The SMR contains details of approximately 39,000 known archaeological sites and features of all types and periods, from the earliest human use of our landscape to the recent industrial past of the 20th Century. The record is continually updated and expanded, as new information becomes available. The SMR is not suitable for planning, utility, RSS or forestry applications.
Highland Archaeology - The SMR is compiled, maintained and developed by the Archaeology Unit of the Highland Council Planning and Development Service. It is a public record, developed at public expense, and forms a resource for research, education, community and economic development. The Archaeology Unit promotes the sustainable use of this resource for present and future benefit. Please note that the online SMR is not designed for use in development control, for assembling information for forestry or agri-environment schemes, or for constructing management policy of sites. In order to source the full SMR information required for such studies all consultants should approach the Highland Council Archaeology Unit directly. If you wish to check the latest additions and corrections, or to search for additional or background information please make an appointment to view the master record held at the Highland Council, Archaeology Unit, Glenurquhart Road, Inverness. The offices are open from 9.00am to 1.00pm and 2.00pm to 5.00pm, from Monday to Friday. Telephone, email and written enquiries are welcome.
